Gary Hewins | Senior Pastor
Gary and Angie Hewins have four beautiful children and 2 grandchildren. As a family they serve their community as a means of building the kingdom of God. He, and his wife, Angie also lead Christian tours to the Holy Land, as well as to Italy. Pastor Hewins answered the call to pastoral ministry over fifteen years ago.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Georgia State University and a Master’s of Arts degree in Religion from Reformed Theological Seminary. Gary is currently writing his thesis for a Doctorate of Ministry at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA.
Missions, is deeply embedded in Gary’s heart. He has been instrumental in proclaiming the gospel in many nations among people devoted to many false gods. His unique preaching and teaching style cultivates a hunger in people for the Word of God.
In January of 2009 Gary was called to Community Bible Church to provide leadership as the Senior Pastor. The church has grown in spiritual depth as well as in number. He is focused on providing spiritual nurturing to the growing congregation while providing both a challenging preaching and teaching ministry. CBC’s expansion includes a new ministry complex near the Western Carolina University campus in Cullowhee, NC.
Pastor Greg received Christ on the floor of his one bedroom, less than clean apartment. Along with his decision to follow Christ he lost his friends, his job, and a life of sin. He feels he is called into ministry to help others realize their value by equipping them to pursue their dreams. Greg received his Bachelor of Arts in Bible and Theology from Lee University, a Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Regent University and is finishing up is Doctoral work at Regent University as well.
Greg is a big fan of “Underdog movies”. Some of his favorites are, We are Marshall, Miracle, and Hoosiers. His top three favorite books are Your God is Too Safe, Pivotal Praying, and Good to Great.
Don’t invite Greg to an ice cream party, he’s allergic (touchy subject). He does, however love jamming out to the Bee Gees and spending lots of quality time with his wife Monica and their two young children *awww*.
In 2003 Amanda and her family moved to Highlands from Atlanta, Georgia. It took some time, but she has finally gotten used to life in the mountains and has really enjoyed being able to raise her children in a small, close-knit town. She enjoys working at CBC along side her husband, Michael. Having three boys of her own, making sure that children have a solid spiritual foundation is really important. Amanda loves to relax with her family and friends, spending time with them at the lake, pool, going on camping trips or heading out to the movies. A good nap is always appreciated if the opportunity presents itself!
Jimmy Bennett was born and raised in a Christian home in the heart of the Bible belt, Nashville, TN. Though Jimmy attended church throughout his childhood, it wasn't until his college years that his faith became personal, and he dedicated his life to Christ. During college is when Jimmy first felt drawn to working with youth and felt especially called to help students strengthen their faith and develop life skills that would help them overcome adversity.
Presently, Jimmy oversees CBC's local and global mission initiatives, as well as Care Ministry. Jimmy can often be found cycling, hiking local trails, and splitting firewood.
Favorite ice cream: Homemade peach with wholle milk poured on top. Favorite movie: The Book of Eli and The Bourne Trilogy. Favorite scriptures: Joshua 1, Isaiah 61, and Psalm 91. Favorite thing to do in his spare time: He loves to spend time with his wife and two daughters and is dedicated to their family mission of pleasng the Lord while pursuing a lfe of creativity, sustainability, and adventure.
Jimmy and his wife Lauren are expecting a healthy baby boy in March 2016 and welcome any name suggestions..
In 2003 Michael and his family moved to Highlands from Atlanta, Georgia. In no time at all he adapted to life in the mountains (he was after all raised on a farm), and contrary to a popular myth he has never been Amish. He enjoys raising his family in a small close knit town. He also enjoys working at CBC along side his wife, Amanda.
Michael began following Jesus at 4 years of age, and shortly after that felt called to be in full time ministry. When Michael is not working in one of his many offices at CBC, he is spending time with his wife, or is learning to enjoy working out to stay ahead of his three growing sons, and trying to figure out how to keep them busy.
"Chad grew up in Nashville, TN, and attended Lee University, where he intended to go into the family business (see “Cody Turner, Worship & Arts Pastor”), but took a photography elective course, and immediately switched to Digital Media. He loves to tell the stories of those around him, and convey the Gospel through using video. He has a beautiful wife, Becca, who has proven to be a source of constant encouragement.
When he’s not playing with cameras, it’s very likely that you’ll catch him watching soccer or “conducting research” of movies, shows, and famous directors (via Netflix). He’s a fan of the Tennessee Titans and Texas Longhorns, and actually believes that they’ll each return to glory before the Lord comes back. He loves to play soccer, volleyball, searching for wayward tee shots, and every other type of sport."
Monica Steely is the beautiful wife of Assistant Pastor, Greg Steely, but she is really so much more than that! Monica sums her life up in three simple words; Beauty for Ashes. Over the years the Lord has taken all the ugly and made it beautiful. He has transformed her heart and made her a new creation.
Monica knew she was called into ministry in one single, isolated moment: over a spaghetti dinner with a friend, she was asked if she thought she would marry a minister. Immediately, she knew ministry would become her life, first as Greg’s wife, then as a graphic designer, and now as a writer and podcaster as well.
Sea salted caramel gelato is Monica’s favorite frozen treat. Her favorite movie is Waiting for Guffman and her favorite book is The Great Gatsby. Duran Duran is her absolute favorite band, hands down. In her spare time Monica loves to write, read, and go for runs (or at least think about it.)
Cheryl was raised Jewish and at 37 years of age fell in love with Christ at a women’s retreat and finally found what always seemed to be missing-Jesus! She knows that working with children must be God’s plan because, “I finally have peace about what I was supposed to be doing with the gifts and talents He gave me!”
Cheryl’s husband Mike and their two children have been a huge part part of CBC’s growth.
She adores Kilwins Salted Caramel Ice Cream and loves to spend time cooking and gardening!
Cody is originally from Pickens, South Carolina. Cody recently graduated from Lee University with a degree in Pastoral Ministry. He has been involved in ministry for the past five years and has a passion for student ministry. Cody loves working with Middle Schoolers and sharing the Gospel.
Cody enjoys playing sports, hiking, and photography. He is always ready to play a pickup game of basketball. Cody loves watching movies of all kinds and is currently in the process of working on his own short film, “Threat Level Midnight.” He also enjoys playing guitar and drums. Cody is currently engaged and will be married to his fiancé, Sarah, in October.
Melani fell deeply in love with Jesus after the birth of her children. She decided that she wanted to give them what she had gotten as a child, the love of Christ! God called her to ministry by being in the right place at the right time. The Lord had been pruning her and leading her to ministry with the skills that He had given her and the opportunities He had put before her.
Her two favorite books are The Hiding Place and Tramp for the Lord by Corrie Ten Boom. When she’s not at CBC she’s relaxing in the Word, entertaining, cooking, hiking, hanging out with family and friends, singing, or playing with her dogs!
Cody Turner | Worship & Arts Pastor
Cody grew up in Nashville, TN, and from a young age, saw firsthand how God has ordained musical worship and the arts as a way to encounter His presence. Although he knew the Lord and served him from a young age, he did not realize that the Lord was drawing him into full-time ministry until just before he graduated high school.
Cody received a Bachelor of Music in Church Music at Lee University. He is a big fan of Tennessee Titans football and UNC basketball. At any given moment, you’ll probably catch him reading a book on Scripture or theology—by anyone from Jim Cymbala to A.W. Tozer, and from John Piper to N.T. Wright. He loves listening to classical and black gospel music, and he’s never heard a Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir song that he doesn’t like!
His prayer is that the music, worship, and arts at CBC will draw people in not only to hear about the glory and majesty of God, but also to cause them to truly encounter His Presence themselves. “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!”

Michael Gonzalez | High School & College
Hello, my name is Michael Gonzalez and I have the awesome privilege of working with the High School & College students of our community. They truly are the “Next Generation” and could use all the support they can get. I have been working directly with children and teens of the area for the past nine years as a middle school basketball and soccer coach, bus driver, Youth & Children’s Pastor, Family Life Pastor, Boys & Girls Club Director, Spanish teacher, P.E. assistant, youth counselor, mentor, tutor and friend. I love spending time with my family, playing disc golf and basketball. I also love to worship God by way of music and any other way I can. I am incredibly passionate about helping the students in our community come to know God and come to know God more, no matter their background or the challenges they have faced because I truly believe that all young men and women have the potential to choose to live out the destiny that God has for them. My passion is to know God more and reflect him well to all He puts in my life.
