Throughout history, the concept of personhood has been debated – when does it start and when does it end? Christianity has and does proclaim that the dignity of human life is the foundation of a moral vision for society. The fact that the concept of personhood is under attack is not a new one and is not specific to our current time. Looking back at the Old Testament, you see one brother killing another due to jealousy (Genesis 4:8 “While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.”), the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the punishment the Lord God inflicted on them (Jude 1:7 “Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.”) These are just two of the first examples of denying dignity to human beings through sexual deviance, adultery, slavery, murder. As mankind has “progressed” in societal evolution, the 20th and 21st centuries have brought two world wars, the Nazis regime, and now Isis. Not much has changed.
What is still the truth, though, is that human beings are willed by God and are bearers of His image. Personhood must be respected and revered. Today’s society suffers from a lack of definition of personhood and, consequently, has seen an increase in pornography, sex trade, murders, families with no father figure, abortion, euthanasia, and the list goes on.
When does life (personhood) start? The Christian answer is - at the moment of conception: (Psalm 139:13-16 “..You knit me together in my mother’s womb; your eyes saw my unformed body…”) And, conversely, should human beings
1) have the right to end another’s suffering
2) have the right to change their gender
These are questions we are confronted with on an almost daily basis. The following blogs are just a few that try to answer these heartfelt questions.
