New human life as God has planned it happens beautifully within the safety of a mother’s womb. But since the 1973 Supreme Court ruling of Roe vs. Wade, and with the Women’s Liberation Movement stressing a woman’s right to “choices” in her own body, Bible based Christians have found themselves morally conflicted. Citing Psalm 139, Jeremiah 1, Genesis 25:22, and Galatians 1:15 to dull of hearing ears, Christians found themselves speaking truth to the darkness.
Since that 1973 ruling 56 million mothers in America have chosen abortion. Are they now happy with their choice? Many are not. Most folks do not realize that 33% of women have experienced abortion, either their own or a relative’s. Because they have been told it was their right to choose, they may feel guilty often trying to repress the hurt. Depression, physical illness and nagging grief may occur, but is often hidden for years. Some can never conceive again.
It takes nine months to have a child. Even inconvenient timing can be weathered when a mother has a hand to hold in the over 4,000 crisis pregnancy centers in America. Pregnancy centers by definition are havens for those finding themselves conflicted by an unplanned pregnancy. Will they carry the baby full term and seek a hand to hold here, or will they seek other solutions as offered by abortion clinics? Nothing can diminish or magnify this tough decision, but pregnancy centers carry this unplanned pregnancy to an incredible and life-supporting beginning, not end. Mother Teresa said it best: “It is the greatest poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.”
Most centers offer free pregnancy tests and free life-affirming sonograms so the mother can see the life she is carrying. Statistics vary but anywhere from 71-85% of pregnant women who witness their child by way of a sonogram will choose life and either keep their child or choose adoption giving their baby a chance to grow and count in our society.
If God says in Psalm 139: “For I put you in your mother’s womb, you are fearfully and wonderfully made”, He means it. In the womb little hearts begin beating a mere eighteen days after conception. By nine weeks God’s creation has individual fingerprints, and by twelve weeks the child can smile. Pastor Gary often speaks of how incredibly certain people are “wired”. The Lord spoke to His servant Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” God is active in the creation. All during the nine months of pregnancy the Lord creates and wires a person to serve Him and love Him.
Recently under-cover-lovers of the unborn child videotaped conversations with employees of Planned Parenthood, America’s largest enemy of the unborn child as the largest abortion provider in our country. When Christians watched the shocking videos of Planned Parenthood’s officials coldly discussing the best methods to extract an aborted baby keeping the most valuable organs intact, we wept. When we heard that Planned Parenthood has to ask permission of the patient, (who clearly could not be called the “mother”, otherwise you would have to call the “specimen” the “baby”) to donate the aborted “specimen’s” parts to research, we mourned. But when we heard the official talk pricing for intact “specimens” (that is formed heads and little livers, tiny hearts and precious lungs) saying if the going price is too low, she can up the price, we were forced to respond.
God loves the unborn. Though many argue the woman’s right over her own body the child within the womb has its own blood, its own heartbeat, and if left safe within the womb its own life spoken of with its own inalienable rights.
So what is the Christian to do to help protect God’s creation, the unborn child?
1. Write your Congressman asking that any funding at all for Planned Parenthood stop.
2. Buy a Right to Life license plate the next time you renew. This is a conversation opener in parking lots.
3. Anytime horrendous acts such as the videos with Planned Parenthood officials occur, write your newspaper in support of the unborn child.
4. Elect Pro Life public officials. Vote for Pro Life Presidential candidates who will appoint Pro Life Supreme Court Justices, and lobby for those candidates.
5. Fund and volunteer at crisis pregnancy centers.
6. Ask your pastor to preach for life before the yearly January 22nd anniversary of Roe v Wade. Organize or attend a march for life on that date.
7. Pray for the leaders of our country to turn back to times when we valued life.
8. Lastly be sensitive to others who may have chosen abortion. Guide them toward
Crisis Pregnancy Centers for counseling. Let them know they are loved by God and can find support from others who also chose abortion.
